Taiwan and Sri Lanka Marine Research Station (TSMRS)

A New Tie between Taiwan and Sri Lanka: National Sun Yat-sen University and University of Ruhuna Establish A Research Station

 

 National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) expanded its international tie with University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka through the joint establishment of Taiwan and Sri Lanka Marine Research Station (TSMRS), which was launched and officially inaugurated on December 4th, 2019. Dr. Mitch, Ming-Chi Chou, Vice President of Research and Development of NSYSU, delegated 17 professors to attend the grand opening ceremony of TSMRS and signed a MoU with the University. The TSMRS would be focusing on the research of “Land ecosystem and conservation: developing biochemical compounds and mushrooms” and “Technology for smart farming”.

 As one of the top universities in Taiwan, NSYSU aims to advance its ranking in the top 200 universities in the world and works hard to expand its international academic scope and impact. In February 2019, the University initiated a cross-country collaboration with a joint establishment of “Taiwan and Sri Lanka Environmental Change Sciences and Technology Innovation Center (TS/ECSTIC)” with University of Sri Jayewardenepura. It was the start of a new chapter for not only academic but also diplomatic relationship between Taiwan and Sri Lanka. To further the research range, TS/ECSTIC invited University of Ruhuna, a public university located at Matara in the south of Sri Lanka, to join the establishment of TSMRS.
NSYSU anticipates the operations of both the TSMRS and TS/ECSTIC could cope with the current New Southbound Policy to facilitate academic research. On top of the goal, they also hope to increase the recruitment of students from Sri Lanka for the purpose of spreading out Taiwan’s academic influence.
